People with foreign names are discriminated against in the German market for rental housing. If you have a foreign name and you are looking for an apartment, it is significantly less likely for you to be invited to an apartment viewing than an applicant with a German sounding name. We found statistical evidence for this kind of discrimination, sending out more than 20,000 applications and evaluation approximately 8,000 responses to apartment advertisements, using fictional German and non-German candidate profiles with identical income, age and other information. In this session we would like to talk about the methodology behind this massive project: The difficulties of web scraping online platforms, sending out thousands of e-mails and reviewing and classifying more than 8,000 responses.
