Money Trail: Introducing Finance Uncovered and our investigation into the Rift Valley Railway.
Finance Uncovered was established in 2016 with the goal of improving the quality and quantity of investigative reporting into illicit financial flows, including money laundering, corruption, tax avoidance and tax evasion. Every year we run a training week in London for investigative journalists from all over the world. Among our attendees have been prominent ICIJ and OCCRP reporters. Our next training will be held on 17 September at City University, London. Following attendance on our course, journalists frequently work with staff from Finance Uncovered and other network members to develop cross border investigations.

In this session, George Turner, one of the founders of Finance Uncovered, introduces the organisation and how they work, showcasing an investigation Finance Uncovered co-ordinated on the Rift Valley Railway. RVR is a historic railroad linking the port of Mombassa in Kenya to Lake Victoria. Following our course, Patrick Mayoyo from Kenya received a tip off that the railroad was hitting the buffers. George worked with Patrick and Berber Verpoest from Flanders to uncover a major scandal on the railway involving hundreds of millions of euros in aid money. The investigation was supported via a Flanders Connects Continents grant administered by the Journalismfund.eu.
