Hack Day - European tenders exposed
Join us in a special 2018 EIJC Hack Day: all tender edition! Public spending is THE way our governments spend our tax money. We need to know how the money is spent, which companies get it, and how corruption in the spending looks like. For all that, journalists need to understand how to look at tender data.  We therefore would like to welcome journalists, techies and non-techies and everything in between to nerd out on 7 million big and small tenders from the 28 EU member states, Norway, the EU Institutions, Iceland, Switzerland and Georgia.  Are you a journalist? Learn what questions you can ask tender data. Use your local knowledge to find stories hidden in between the table rows. Leave the day with a potential story and share it with the conference on Saturday.  Are you technical but not a journalist? Help journalists tell their story, visualise the data, interrogate the data. Or make your own story, look for trends across countries and sectors, join the data with other data sets, visualise them.  You can explore tender data collected and cleaned by the Digiwhist project in an interactive tender dashboard (https://opentender.eu/start), look for patterns in the data with Elvis (http://tenders.exposed/) or import and explore the raw tables and build your own analysis.  Experts on the tender data will be there to guide you through the data, corruption indicators and answer any questions you might have about tenders.  We are looking forward to welcome you at the 2018 EIJC Hack Day public spending data extravaganza! The data journalism Teachers & Trainers’ Day embraces offers for those working with mid-career training as well as those teaching journalism students. Meet some of the most experienced data journalism trainers and lecturers from Europe and the US to learn from and network with. This year the day will both address practical questions for the seminar room such as ‘how to divide time between lectures and exercises’, ‘how to create efficient exercises’ or ‘how to collaborate with newsrooms’. But it will also address more structural questions such as ‘how to share and learn from syllabi’ or ‘how data journalism trainers and lecturers in Europe exchange best practice’. Get ready for the data buffet - research strategies using open data
Data Buffet: Public data can be a precious help on the way to a good story if you know how to deal with it. There are many public datasets from governments within Europe like the EU Open Data Portal or the German Genesis/regionalstatistik.de. But these datasets are rarely used by data journalists for their stories. One key reason: These platforms provide only the raw datasets without any context - they are made by bureaucrats for bureaucrats. In this workshop, we will discuss from a journalistic perspective (no data or tech skills required!) the research strategies and actual examples of subjects that you could cover as a journalist when digging into these open datasets, add the context and write pitches of great stories that can be made out of these and taken home to your newsroom.

The EU has started to publish datasets by the European institutions and on national level. Two portals – one for the institutions (EU Open Data Portal) and one for the member states (European Data Portal) – provide an overview of available datasets including information on metadata and links to the original datasets. Representatives from both portals will guide you through the available material and search options. Furthermore, there will be a presentation by the winning application from the first EU Datathon 2017, a Hackathon that aimed at using and linking datasets from EU institutions. The event is moderated by Simon Jockers, a data journalist and web developer with German investigative journalism non-profit CORRECTIV.

Finding needles in haystacks with fuzzy matching
CAR training: Fuzzy matching is a process for linking up names that are similar, but not quite the same. It has become an increasingly important part of data-led investigations as a way to identify connections between public figures, key people, and companies that are relevant to a story. This class will cover how fuzzy matching typically fits into the investigative process, with some story examples. We will show you how to run some of the different types of fuzzy match on some real datasets, including the pros and cons of each.

Journo's choice, coder's choice
How much tech is too much tech? When we dig into data-driven investigations we must choose the right approach: should we scrape a whole web site? Build a database? Or just spend the afternoon in Excel to find some insight? In this session Helena (the pragmatist) and Friedrich (the techmatist) will go through some cases they’ve worked on and show different approaches - some more technical, some more journalistic. Traditionally, they will end up shouting at each other in disagreement on how to do things.

Scraping the sharing economy
Airbnb, Uber and Deliveroo are changing the way we live and work, but the statistics they publish can't be trusted and you can't send them a freedom of information request. Lucky for us, these platforms only work by putting information online for people to see, and what can be seen can be scraped and studied. This talk will discuss the making of Airbnb Unlocked, the international investigation into Airbnb by De Tijd (Belgium), Trouw (Netherlands), Le Monde (France) and Süddeutsche Zeitung (Germany). We will talk about how to keep large scraping projects manageable, how to cover your tracks, how to analyze huge amounts of data and how and why to collaborate with other newsrooms. We'll keep things mostly non-technical – anyone can attend and learn something. NOTE: There is also a round table on covering the 'sharing economy'.

Euros for docs and follow the grant: Making funding transparent in science and medicine
Scientists and medical doctors are often sponsored by industry, in some cases leading to bias. This sponsoring is hardly transparent for journalists and citizens alike. Here we present and discuss two approaches to address that problem.

Pharmaceutical companies are regularly sponsoring medical doctors, and thereby potentially influencing their decisions. As part of a self-regulatory initiative, the European pharmaceutical companies are now publishing the donations they have given medical doctors. These publications are voluntary and incomplete. Still, by mining them, important insights into the influencing of doctors by pharmaceutical industry can be gained.

Another approach uses scientific papers as data source. In many journals, scientists are required to state any industry funding they have received. "Follow the grant" is an ongoing project to build a database of these statements of conflicts of interest and funding. Its aim is to help journalists, experts and citizens to systematically look for who is sponsoring research.

Don't fear the robots: five reasons we should welcome our new automated newsroom tools
Is automation in journalism something to fear? Is a robot going to take your job? Possibly, but there are reasons to be cheerful. With some news organisations now breaking live automated stories, these advances in technology provide real opportunities for investigations. This talk will explain the ways automation is already being used in newsrooms, why we don’t believe the coming wave of automation is a threat, and how we can embrace this new technology to improve the quality of investigative reporting at a time of shrinking newsroom resources. We’ll highlight what we think are the five main opportunities.

Discrimination in the housing market - making the data test
People with foreign names are discriminated against in the German market for rental housing. If you have a foreign name and you are looking for an apartment, it is significantly less likely for you to be invited to an apartment viewing than an applicant with a German sounding name. We found statistical evidence for this kind of discrimination, sending out more than 20,000 applications and evaluation approximately 8,000 responses to apartment advertisements, using fictional German and non-German candidate profiles with identical income, age and other information. In this session we would like to talk about the methodology behind this massive project: The difficulties of web scraping online platforms, sending out thousands of e-mails and reviewing and classifying more than 8,000 responses.
