KEYNOTE speaker Joris Luyendijk: bringing journalism to a new era
Investigative journalism is getting ever more professional. But very often little or no political action is taken to solve the problems, we unveil. Does this leave citizens with a sense of being particularly powerless? Is investigative journalism – without leading to significant changes – thus indirectly fuelling anger and drive citizens towards protest parties? Dutch anthropologist and journalist Joris Luyendijk has investigated the financial sector for the Guardian’s Banking Blog; he has mapped the ’clans’ of politicians, officials, lobbyists and journalists in the government buildings of his native Netherlands, and in his most recent large project he has taken the time to listen to people who had turned to Dutch protest parties asking but one question: ”Could we talk, please?”.
Now he asks the big question for our profession in this era: How can we adapt our profession and our professionalism to this new reality?
